Peace Reader Program Guidelines
Goal:
-
To bring people into contact with issues of peace and justice and help them see the importance of these issues in their own lives and the life of the community.
How it works:
-
During the months of _______________, members of (your organization) are encouraged to read (or be read) books about peacemaking, race relations, environmental concerns, and other peace/justice topics. Children should read books appropriate for their age and skill level.
-
The (planning committee name) will help participants find appropriate books by putting recommended books on the labeled shelf. Other suggested titles are in lists on the library table.
Other lists are online at: _______________________. You may also request books from the public library through Inter-Library Loan or read books from home.
-
For each peace book* read, children and youth may earn Peace Points by doing one of the following activities:
| Activity | Points |
Fill out a Peace Reader Response Sheet. The detail of the response
should reflect age and ability. The youngest participants may want
to draw a picture as their response and older children should offer
a more thorough analysis or creative response.
4
Make a poster about your book. Be creative in size, shape, and content.
5
Middle-school and high-school youth may also earn points by reading
to pre- or beginning readers and helping them complete a response
form or poster.
5
Prepare a short (3-4 min.) "book talk" for children's time on Sunday
morning-telling about the book and perhaps reading from it.
10
(Pick up and turn in Peace Reader Response Forms at the library table.)
Rewards:
- Ben and Jerry's Peace Pop. For every TEN points earned, the participant
will receive a coupon for a free Peace Pop redeemable at __________________.
*A book over 120 p. counts as two books.
