I am writing to you out of concern for the continued U.S. policy of providing military assistance to Colombia. Members of my congregation, ____, are fasting today in solidarity with Colombian Mennonites as they celebrate Pan y Paz (Bread and Life). We are deeply troubled by the increasing violence in Colombia, and ask that the U.S. government stop sending arms, training and military equipment. Instead, the United States should promote non-violent alternatives.

Colombia's civil war is rooted in deep economic and social injustice and has been going on for four decades. It will not be solved easily or militarily. Armed groups have already stepped up fighting in response to U.S. military aid. Civilians are by far the most frequent casualties of the war - experiencing threats, intimidation, disappearances and murder.

True security and stability in Colombia will only be found when the root causes of injustice are addressed. This will require a long and difficult process of dialogue between Colombian civil society and the government. U.S. support for this peace process is critical. The United States should also provide assistance for the nearly two million people who are displaced for their homes and support efforts to make the judicial system objective and fair.

I understand that the Administration is proposing to send another $374 million in military aid to Colombia this year. I strongly encourage you to oppose these efforts, as well as attempts to allow previous funding, intended for counter-narcotics, to now be used directly to support the war effort. Instead, I ask that you consider alternative policies such as the ones mentioned above.

We are working with our Colombian Mennonite sisters and brothers to promote peace. We pray that U.S. policies will also lead toward a non-violent resolution of the conflict, instead of escalating the war.
