Dear Pastor:

We invite you to choose from this list of ideas to use in programming an event in commemoration of the UN International Day of Peace, September 21.

  • A march or walk from the church to a park or public space
  • A banner promoting peace and reconciliation
  • Prayers and biblical readings around the theme of peace
  • Shared bread among those attending the event
  • Shirts sporting symbols or passages about peace
  • Singing, concerts, litanies
  • Fasting to invite reflection on pacifist living
  • Balloons, buttons, magnets or bookmarks to offer the public promoting a commitment to peace
  • Public vigil
  • Bonfire and singing
  • Community lunch to bring churches, civic groups, social organizations, and other community members together
  • Open air liturgical service
  • Biblical study of the declaration
  • Peace Banquet

We are including litanies, a petition to collect signatures from the community as a symbol of the commitment of each to construct peace, the United Nation's resolution for the Universal Day of Nonviolence, biblical readings and commentaries to share along with bread or a community meal, the 2002 Pan y Paz declaration with biblical commentaries and the 2003 declaration. We also include an open letter to all armed actors, which will be publicized on a national level this year through newspaper adds.

We hope for your feedback on this year's declaration. Please email them to the email address

Sincerely,
Pan y Paz
