Counter-recruitmentHigh school and college are two of the biggest crossroads people encounter in life. For many young people, decisions made in their late teens go on to shape the rest of their lives. Some youth desire to escape a stressful home life, unemployment, poor grades, or an apparent dead-end in life. Some youth are drawn to world travel, adventure, college tuition, serving their nation, or continuing a family tradition. Most fall a bit into each.Mennonites are already familiar with what Jesus has to say in Matthew Chapter 5. Though somehow open to interpretation, the ninth verse can be quoted by virtually any peace church devotee. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God." Later on, in verses 38 to 42, Christ gives the instruction concerning cheeks with which we are all familiar. "You have heard that it was said, 'an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile." It is exceedingly difficult for most folks in the pews to fly around the world, hire a knowledgeable guide, make their way into the heart of a hidden Al Qaeda compound, and offer their right cheek - or any other part of their body - to whoever has declared "Death to America" that particular day. However, by loving our neighbor as ourselves through compassionate counter-recruitment, we can go the second mile Christ suggests.
