Wisdom Tales From Around the World
DeSpain, Pleasant
1993   126 p.   Ages: 9-Adult

Stories from around the world ranges from the serious to the humorous, and from the relatively familiar ("The Magic Pot" from China and the Grimms' "Clever Gretel") to the lesser-known ("The Goat and the Rock" from Tibet). DeSpain has included something for everyone-trickster stories about Coyote and Anansi, Creation stories, and tales of fools. Each selection is short (two to three pages) and is accompanied by a full-page, black-and-white, pen-and-ink illustration. The language is simple and direct, which makes the book a good source for beginning storytellers. Not much information given on cultural context. (from Susan Gifford, School Library Journal)

A collection of 27 folktales from around the world. Phrasing and imagery are consistently vivid, making these tales excellent candidates for storytelling as well as good read-alouds. The book's design has large pages and print and wide margins. An effective, full-page black-and-white drawing enhances each selection. (from Lee Bock, School Library Journal)

The Yellow Star: The Legend of King Christian X of Denmark
Carme Agra Deedy
2000      Ages: 6-Adult
ISBN: 1561452084

Select Online Source

The bravery of the Danes and their king has inspired many legends--the most endearing one about the yellow star, which symbolizes the loyalty and fearless spirit of the king and his people. You may be surprised that this is legend and not fact, but the author includes helpful notes at the end about her research. What is fact is still remarkable: among Nazi-occupied countries, only Denmark rescued the overwhelming majority of its Jews through a swift and cooperative effort. Of the 500 Jews who were deported to a camp, all but 51 survived due in large part to the Danish government's intercession on their behalf. For more information on the book, and on the Danish resistance movement, see the Peachtree Publisher's website: www.peachtree-online.com .
