"…in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God…" (Phil. 4:6)

We invite you and your congregation to light a peace lamp, pray for peace, and sign peace petitions to your federal legislators.
January 4, 2008 update
Congregations have responded with deep thanks for the opportunity to pray and act for peace with Mennonite Church USA during Advent. But peacemaking isn't a seasonal activity that stops when December ends; we hope many congregations continue to visibly pursue peace so their members and communities learn the Jesus-way of nonviolence.
One way to continue working for peace is to have public vigils and register them with Christian Peace Witness for Iraq www.ChristianPeaceWitness.org so folks from your community have hope that others care about peace and will support them as peacemakers.
On our photo gallery are some of the photos that congregations sent. Also, comments which were sent are posted. Please continue to send photos and comments about any peace and justice activities of your congregation!
Sixty-two congregations requested lamps; 27 congregations sent or delivered petitions to their federal representatives.
Here is an update from Rachelle Lyndaker Schlabach, MCC Washington Office director:

UPDATE ON IRAN: Throughout this fall, U.S. rhetoric about potential air strikes against Iran was increasing. The main issue at stake was Iran's nuclear program, as the U.S. claimed Iran was developing nuclear weapons. In this atmosphere, then, it was striking that on Dec 3, 2007, a National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) was released stating with "high confidence" that Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003 and has not resumed it. This estimate summarizes the view of all U.S. intelligence agencies and contradicts the 2005 report that Iran was continuing work on a nuclear weapons program. The impact of this report is not fully clear yet. Overall, the momentum for U.S. military strikes has clearly decreased and, as MCC Representative for Iran, Iraq, Jordan and Palestine, Daryl Byler, says, "the region is breathing a collective sigh of relief." But President Bush and some others within the Administration say that the report only highlights the need to maintain pressure on Iran and are calling on Iran to "come clean," a phrase that implies that Iran is hiding its true actions. In the new year, the MCC Washington Office will be working with like-minded advocates to get a congressional resolution introduced calling for "direct, comprehensive and unconditional" talks between the United States and Iran, so that matters of concern to the two countries can be addressed peacefully and not through military strikes. Many thanks to all of you who participated with prayers and petitions in the Advent campaign. We will be following up with some of the offices you contacted, and will keep you updated on the progress of the legislation as it moves forward. PRAYER REQUEST: Please pray that U.S. policymakers will seek a path of peaceful, diplomatic relations with Iran and that peoples in the two nations will learn to know one another as friends.

The free help we provided:
| We gave peace lamps to first 100 congregations requesting them.

We provided Free Conference calls to give you tools for visiting with your congressional representatives.
Introduction
We believe that prayer changes us and changes the world. Educational research backs this claim by showing that people who take action for peace have more hope during bleak times. Will you offer these opportunities to your congregation, this witness to your youth and children?
Maybe you've seen photos of Mennonites giving peace lamps to religious leaders in Iraq (2002) and Iran (2007), each time saying, "When you see this lamp, know that Mennonites in the United States are praying for peace between us." We invite you and your congregation to help keep this promise by lighting a peace lamp on Dec. 2, praying for peace, and signing peace petitions to your federal legislators.
