Racism harms the body of Christ.
Make a bracelet to learn how racism and white privilege affect you.
This activity was created for Mennonite Church USA Convention 2009. You'll need:
- Instructions (287k PDF)
- Brochure (1832k PDF) Email Susan Mark Landis
to ask about availability and cost.
- Beads and twine (We bought our wooden beads and twine from Fire Mountain Gems and the colorful, Fair Trade beads from BeadforLife. The twine frequently frayed; it helped to run it across soap. The BeadforLife beads had very small holes which we enlarged a bit with needles. The twine seemed thick for some of the beads. BeadforLife is working to make their bead holes larger by Jan 2010.)
- Scissors, needles, soap, etc.
Beads are currently (July 2009) popular with youth and they came to the exhibit and persevered long to make their bracelet. The fourth-sixth graders created bracelets using simplified questions. The physical movement while mentally thinking through a question appears to increase learning and ownership. We nearly ran out of beads.
