[Author's note: Margaret Hassan, of Care International in Iraq, was abducted in October and, weeks later, allegedly killed in the midst of an occupation she persistently denounced. Margaret was a good friend and colleague of Mennonite Central Committee workers in Iraq. Her courage, selflessness, and love for the Iraqi people, especially the children, were profoundly impressed upon us. Her abduction and death leave us with grieving hearts. In deepest gratitude for the life of Margaret Hassan, I share these words.]

sacrificed between

capricious violence
still offends

because even now
we believe
in goodness
hope
love

despite our
anguished cries
aching souls

rest now
in peace
