Middle class luxury? I think not.

My fellow blogger Art seems to have written a very well thought out blog, however, in addition to some very true points, his thesis was that peace is a luxury. I do not agree. Any time some one stands up for what they believe in, his or her cause becomes a way of living, NOT A LUXURY. Think back to the anti-war movement of the 1960's. Sure, some people probably joined the movement because of peer pressure, but surely Art is not suggesting that after all those protests and rallies where people were injured or killed, that set of beliefs was a LUXURY? I think Art made some statements that definately apply to our lives, however, we must remember that the "Institutional Church" of the time Art cited was made up of mostly racist bigots. I AM NOT TRYING TO START AN ARGUMENT OR BE DIFFICULT, I AM JUST STATING MY OPINION.

My point was that when peace becomes something that is only comfortable for us to do (which becomes especially easy with us being North American Mennonites), then it has the very real threat of neglecting justice and exploiting the poor and underprivileged.

Again, if we use peace as only an end-goal, then the temptation to use peace for our own economic gain becomes maximized. However, if peace can be seen as a catalyst to gaining shalom (justice, harmony, and salvation), then we might have a chance at regaining the vision of Jesus of Nazareth.
