Work Sabbath

Purpose: to emphasize the seriousness of an event by stopping everyday activities to take time for special prayer and action

Witness: preparing for and taking part in a Work Sabbath makes clear your strong beliefs to your co-workers, your boss, your family, your legislators, and any others you link with or discuss the action with. Your willingness to suffer (from misunderstanding to docked pay) for this witness is compelling evidence of your Christian commitment and values.

Possible scenario for Work Sabbath to witness against U.S. military troops beginning a war campaign:

  1. Inform anyone (boss and co-workers, family) who might be affected by your Work Sabbath about your intentions and reasons.
  2. Also inform your legislators, emphasizing that this pledge demonstrates the significance of your feelings about this issue.
  3. Prepare for possible Work Sabbath by
    1. finding others in your area who might want to join for public prayer,
    2. writing the prayers,
    3. deciding where the public prayer service will take place and getting permission for the gathering,
    4. collecting the facts you'll want to emphasize in contacts with legislators,
    5. deciding whether you'll be able to personally visit legislators' offices on your Work Sabbath, or whether you will phone or fax your position, and organizing contact information,
    6. learning where to receive timely news of an invasion,
    7. planning for different events if an invasion takes place during other than work hours.
  4. If you hear of an invasion, stop what you are doing, again inform those affected that you will be leaving and when you will be returning, and turn your attention to prayer and contacting legislators.
  5. Tell others how this goes!
