Conscientious objection to military taxation

As our youth consider how to serve Jesus whether or not there might be a draft of their bodies, perhaps you and people in your congregation are wondering how adults can take a stand against war. One way is to support the Religious Freedom Peace Tax Fund Bill. If you or someone in your congregation has a deeply held conscientious conviction against paying taxes for military use, you can send letters to legislators and along with your IRS returns. Below you'll find sample letters, prepared by Steve Ratzlaff, the Mennonite Church USA representative to National Campaign for the Peace Tax Fund Board.

*  Letter to your legislators
*  Letter to include with your IRS returns

To find out who your legislators are, see

*  English: http://www.congress.org
*  Spanish: http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/index.es.html

or contact your local public library.

Please send your version of this letter to:

Your Representative
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515
And send a carbon copy to:
Your Senators
U.S. Senate
Washington, DC 20510
If you choose to send the IRS letter with your tax returns, please note:

IRS regulations prohibit writing directly on your tax return (to write even "see attached" makes you liable for a $500 frivolous filing fee) The IRS does not have a policy against enclosing a letter of protest, however. Do not staple your letter to your IRS form.

Please send copies of all letters to:

National Campaign for a Peace Tax Fund
2121 Decatur Pl NW
Washington, DC 20008
Your rights of conscience include objection to military taxation.
